1. Who will own the domain and hosting once it’s live?
Why it matters: this decides whether you can ever leave without losing your website. The answer you want: “you, from day one”.
2. Do I get full admin access, or just editor access?
Why it matters: editor access lets you change text. Admin access is real ownership. We have written more on this in what no lock-in really means. The answer you want: “full admin, no restrictions”.
3. Who is actually building my site?
Why it matters: a lot of quotes are sold by one person and built by whoever is free that week. The answer you want: a clear, specific answer, not a vague “our team”.
4. Is this a fixed price, or will it be billed hourly?
Why it matters: hourly billing can drift a long way past the original estimate. More on that in fixed quote or hourly. The answer you want: a number in writing, with what is and is not included.
5. What happens after launch?
Why it matters: some agencies disappear the moment the invoice is paid. The answer you want: a clear answer about support, even if it is simply “you own it, so it is yours to run”.
6. Are the SEO basics actually covered?
Why it matters: a beautiful site that Google cannot read properly is a beautiful site nobody finds. The answer you want: confirmation that titles, meta descriptions and basic structure are set up properly, not an afterthought.
7. Will it actually work well on mobile?
Why it matters: most visitors to a small business site are on their phone, not a desktop. The answer you want: a real answer about how it is tested on mobile, not just “yes, it’s responsive”.
8. Can I make edits myself later?
Why it matters: if every small text change requires an invoice, that adds up fast. The answer you want: yes, and a real explanation of how.
9. What is the actual total cost, all in?
Why it matters: hosting, domain renewal, and “small” extras can turn a cheap quote into an expensive year. The answer you want: the full picture, not just the build price.
10. What happens if I want to leave?
Why it matters: this is the question that reveals everything else. The answer you want: “you take it all with you, no hard feelings”.
